What is Cold Plunging?
Cold plunging is the practice of willingly submerging oneself in freezing cold water for an extended period. While some people report feeling invigorated, others find it unbearable—it's truly a personal experience. Some reported benefits include reduced inflammation, increased cell renewal, enhanced circulation, and improved mood. However, as with any health practice, do your own research and consult a doctor before trying it.
There are also risks associated with cold plunging, including hypothermia and the potential danger of becoming trapped under ice if done outdoors. Always ensure you have a way to warm up quickly and never cold plunge alone—there are far better ways to make headlines than a bizarre accident.
Where to Cold Plunge in Colorado
If you're still interested in trying cold plunging, here are a few places in Colorado where you can take the plunge:
Clear Creek, Golden
A free outdoor option, Clear Creek offers a deep natural swimming hole near the library, large enough for a group. Be mindful of ice patches and use the library parking lot.
Iron Mountain Hot Springs, Glenwood Springs
Located in Glenwood Springs, this spot features multiple hot springs and one dedicated cold pool. Warm up in a hot spring afterward for a balanced experience. Glenwood is about a four-hour drive from Denver.
Boulder Creek, Boulder
Popular for swimming in the summer, Boulder Creek can also be visited in winter for a true cold plunge. It’s recommended to stay west of the library for a more natural setting and to avoid urban debris. Always bring a friend, watch for ice, and check water levels to avoid unexpected scrapes on rocks.
Saint Mary’s Glacier Lake, Idaho Springs
For those willing to take a short hike, taking a plunge in Saint Mary’s Glacier Lake offers a scenic yet frigid experience. Located at the base of the glacier, the lake remains ice-cold even in the summer.
Other Cold Plunge Options
Outside of natural locations in Colorado, you can check local fitness recovery centers, which offer a more controlled environment for cold plunging. If you're interested in a DIY approach, Amazon has a variety of cold plunge tubs similar to those used by athletes.
Whichever option you choose, always prioritize safety and be mindful of your body’s limits. Happy plunging!
